In the era of Photoshop, the sight of a manipulated, enhanced or even fantastical photograph is such a commonplace occurrence that the modern viewer scarcely bats an eyelid. But spare a thought for the photographical illusionists of the past, those industrious moustache-twiddling gentlemen (and ladies – everyone had moustaches in those days) who toiled away in dark rooms to produce these amazing images.
Going back as far as the early 1800s, these pictures were created using trial and error and numerous painstaking techniques including photomontage, combination printing and retouching of negatives to name but a few. There was no ‘undo’ button in those days! Hope you enjoy the results of their labours.
